The District’s menu scene is pretty quiet this week as the big Christmas dinner planning is in full swing. There are some fun and tasty new menus to sample that offer traditional Jewish fare during the Festival of Lights, you can partake of the Feast of the Seven Fishes for 24 days, and burgers are for the birds — in this case, ducks. Stay tuned for our Christmas dinner and brunch round up next week in place of the weekly menu report.

Burger, Tap & Shake
If you are tired of turkey and want to sink your teeth into a bird with more flavor, then Burger, Tap & Shake’s December Burger of the Month is right up your alley. It’s called "Christmas Duck," sells for just $9 and is a savory, juicy char-griddled duck patty garnished with Swiss cheese, ruby red kraut, and orange marmalade aioli. And for the perfect drink? Choose the virgin Candy Cane milkshake made with vanilla ice cream and candy cane flavors or go for a shake with kick and try “Bad Santa” made with vanilla ice cream, eggnog, bourbon, and nutmeg. Now that’ll put you in the holiday spirit.

Jackson 20
This year, Hanukkah begins at sunset on Sunday, December 6, and ends on Monday, December 14, and Jackson 20 is celebrating by offering a special menu they’re calling Eight Crazy Nights at Jackson 20. Available Sunday, December 6 to Monday, December 14, the menu features classics like comforting matzoh ball soup, pastrami on rye, chopped chicken liver, blintzes, sweet potato knishes, and more.

Urbana
You don’t have to be Italian to appreciate the delicious traditional Christmas Eve meal known as Feast of the Seven Fishes, and if you head to Urbana you can enjoy it the entire month of December (well, at least until Christmas Eve). Chef McKee’s five-course menu includes trio of crudo, Nantucket bay scallops, grilled eel, squid ink bucatini, and black sea bass, followed by torta della nonna for dessert. The price is $65 per person and we suggest you reserve now because this is a popular restaurant.

He’s paying 15% more because demand is so high. David Portalatin at the NPD Group says the craze started with Chick-fil-A’s expansion in 2017. Then came Popeye’s new sandwich in 2019. Now it seems like every chain needs one.

“The American consumer loves to try new things, especially if we’re already familiar with it,” Portalatin said.

Chicken makes people feel safe trying unfamiliar flavors, like the Korean-style gochujang chicken Shake Shack tested earlier this year.

Portalatin said the last time the industry faced a shortage was a few years ago during a chicken wing boom. But businesses always find workarounds. That’s how we got boneless wings.
